The Short Answer
Yes, you need winter equipment.
From November 15th to April 15th, it is mandatory by law to have either winter tires fitted OR snow chains on board when driving on the Brenner Motorway (A22) and on all roads in South Tyrol (Val Gardena included).
This obligation applies regardless of the weather. Even if it is sunny and dry, you can be fined if you do not have the correct equipment.
Police checks are common, especially at highway exits. Fines range from €87 to €345. In severe weather, the police can also prohibit you from continuing your journey until the car is equipped.
Winter Tires vs. Chains: What should you do?
The law says “or,” but local experience says “both.”
1. The Highway (A22)
The Brenner Motorway is kept very clean. Standard winter tires are usually sufficient. However, sudden heavy snowfall can cause traffic jams where stopping and starting becomes difficult without good traction.
2. The Valley Road
The road from the highway exit (Chiusa/Klausen) up to Ortisei is winding but well-maintained. Winter tires are essential here.
3. The Towns & Driveways
This is where tourists get stuck. The driveways to hotels in Selva or Santa Cristina are often steep and heated ramps are not universal. If you are staying in a “Ski-in/Ski-out” location, chains in the trunk are a lifesaver.
If you rent a car at Verona, Venice, or Milan airports, do not assume it has winter tires. It is an “extra” you must pay for. Check the sidewall: Look for the M+S marking. Even better, look for the Snowflake inside a Mountain (3PMSF) symbol, which indicates a true winter compound.
Are “All-Season” Tires Allowed?
Legally? Yes, if they have the M+S (Mud + Snow) marking.
Practically? We do not recommend them.
Val Gardena is at 1,500m altitude. Temperatures in January frequently drop to -10°C or -15°C. All-season rubber compounds harden at these temperatures, significantly increasing your braking distance. True winter tires remain soft and grippy in the cold.
What if I get stuck?
If you are stuck on a snowy pass or your car won’t start:
- ACI (Automobile Club Italy): Call 803 116. They are the standard breakdown service (fees apply if you aren’t a member).
- Local Mechanics: There are reliable garages in Ortisei, Santa Cristina and Selva that sell chains and offer towing.
Summary Checklist
- Dates: Nov 15 – Apr 15.
- Best Setup: Winter Tires fitted + Chains in the trunk.
- Minimum Legal Setup: Summer tires + Chains on board (We strongly advise against this).
- Speed Limit: On the A22 (Brenner to Bolzano South), the speed limit is reduced to 110 km/h (normally 130 km/h).
