If you are opening your phone at Innsbruck Airport or Bolzano Train Station looking for an Uber, you are going to be waiting a long time.
There is no Uber, Lyft, or Bolt in Val Gardena.
Due to strict Italian transport regulations, ride-sharing apps are effectively blocked in the Dolomites. The “gig economy” drivers you are used to in London or New York do not exist here.
But don’t panic. The local system is reliable—if you know how to use it.
Why Isn’t There Uber?
In Italy, taxi and private driver licenses are strictly regulated under Law 21/1992. To transport passengers commercially, drivers need either:
- A Taxi License (limited in number per municipality)
- An NCC License (Noleggio Con Conducente — “Rental with Driver”)
These licenses are expensive, require professional exams, and are limited in number. This legal framework effectively blocks Uber’s standard “anyone can be a driver” business model.
While Uber has recently partnered with licensed taxi operators in major Italian cities (Rome, Milan), Val Gardena is a small mountain valley with no Uber presence.
The Alternative: How Taxis Actually Work Here
Instead of apps, Val Gardena relies on a mix of Independent Drivers and a centralized Consortium.
The Consortium (24/7 Guarantee)
Taxi Autosella operates a shared dispatch system across Selva, Ortisei, and Santa Cristina. They coordinate night rotation schedules so a driver is always on call—even at 3 AM after a delayed flight.
Independent taxi drivers often turn off their phones after 20:00. If you’re stuck at a restaurant or après-ski bar late at night, call the Consortium directly for guaranteed availability.
WhatsApp Booking (No Italian Required)
Language anxiety is real. Calling a dispatch center and speaking in a foreign language can be intimidating.
The good news: most modern drivers in Val Gardena now use WhatsApp. This means:
- You can text your location (just drop a Google Maps pin)
- You get a written price quote upfront (no surprises)
- You have a digital record of the booking
Check our Val Gardena Taxi Directory for drivers who accept WhatsApp bookings. Look for the WhatsApp badge on their profiles.
What About Night Buses?
Val Gardena does have a Nightliner bus that runs between Selva and Ortisei on select evenings. However, there are important limitations:
- Your Val Gardena Guest Pass is NOT valid on the night bus
- Tickets cost €3-5 per ride (pay on board)
- The service only runs on certain evenings (not every night)
Check the official schedules at valgardena.it.
For reliable late-night transport after bars and restaurants close, a taxi remains your best option.
The “Bolzano Station” Question
If you are arriving by train at Bolzano/Bozen, be aware of the difference:
| Option | Type | Pricing |
|---|---|---|
| City taxis at station | Bolzano municipal taxi | Metered fare |
| Pre-booked Val Gardena driver | NCC/Transfer | Fixed quote |
Pre-book a Val Gardena driver for a fixed-price quote (typically €115-150). Our drivers track train delays and meet you at the platform. Find a driver here.
Can I Pay by Card?
Yes. By Italian law, all taxi and transfer services are required to accept card payments (POS terminals). You do not need to withdraw large amounts of cash.
Summary: 3 Rules for Val Gardena Taxis
- No Apps — Delete Uber. Use WhatsApp or phone instead.
- Pre-book for Long Distances — Airport and station transfers should always be booked in advance for a fixed rate.
- Night Owls — Save the Consortium number for late-night emergencies.
